The client

Tangentyere Constructions is an Aboriginal-owned and operated construction company established by Tangentyere Council. As a leading provider of construction and maintenance services in Alice Springs, Tangentyere Constructions offers significant opportunities for Aboriginal employment in the region. A key focus of their work is the maintenance of housing within the local town camps, for which they employ dedicated Housing Maintenance Officers (HMOs). With a reach extending across Central Australia, Tangentyere Constructions serves a population of over 10,000 people, undertaking projects far and wide to meet the needs of the community.

The problem

Tangentyere Constructions, an Aboriginal-owned construction company under Tangentyere Council, sought to streamline their reporting process for property maintenance in the Alice Springs Town Camps.

Given the extensive scope of their operations, reporting requirements were complex, involving multiple funding bodies and stakeholders. This created a significant administrative burden for the management team. Previously, data collection relied on paper records and Excel spreadsheets, resulting in a two-week timeframe to compile monthly reports. This not only consumed valuable management time but also posed challenges to data accuracy and real-time access to information.

The solution

Beginning in 2016, HutSix collaborated with Tangentyere Constructions, an Aboriginal-owned construction company under Tangentyere Council, to develop a cloud-based CRM system tailored to their specific requirements.

This custom-built solution enables Tangentyere Constructions to track and manage their construction and maintenance services within community housing and town camps in Central Australia. By utilizing this CRM, they can efficiently share job information with the Department of Housing, improving data integrity and reducing administrative burdens. As there was no pre-existing system suitable for their unique needs, HutSix created a bespoke solution that empowers Tangentyere Constructions in their commitment to Aboriginal employment and housing maintenance.

The results

The software developed for Tangentyere Constructions, an Aboriginal-owned construction company under Tangentyere Council, has significantly streamlined their reporting processes. Monthly reports that once took two weeks to compile are now completed in just two days, resulting in a 90% reduction in reporting time.

Through this cloud-based software, minor reports can be generated instantly, and relevant information is accessible with a simple click. Tangentyere Constructions now effectively manages maintenance for 809 houses across 28 locations in Central Australia, with all job tracking facilitated by the software. The application is seamlessly utilised by Housing Maintenance Officers (HMOs) on-site, ensuring immediate access to information for all users.

The enhanced efficiency of this application has enabled Tangentyere Constructions to expand their contracts, leveraging their increased capacity and improved project management capabilities.

The progression

With the recent update to their CRM, Tangentyere Constructions, an Aboriginal-owned construction company affiliated with Tangentyere Council, has implemented a streamlined process for service requests. The Department of Housing can now directly submit their requests to the Tangentyere Constructions team, minimising communication touchpoints and eliminating unnecessary friction.

This efficient system not only reduces the waiting time for residents in need of repairs or maintenance but also alleviates the administrative workload for both the Department of Housing and Tangentyere Constructions.
